Black XL please

In case you can’t tell…

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I’ve been doing homework for four days straight and got home from class after 10pm, so before bed I’m just messing around on the internet.

My weekly schedule is as such:

Monday – 6-8p – Paleography (@ Columbia)

Tuesday – 2-4p – Research Seminar

Tuesday – 4:15-6:15p – Medieval Latin

Wednesday – 6:30-8:30p – Byzantine Empire and Emperor

As mentioned before, the tutoring thing fell through, at least for now. I have a second interview at Starbucks (not sure why that’s necessary unless they are going to offer me something better than barrista). I have also applied for some clerical/administrative jobs at school, as well as IT services; school job apps will be reviewed starting next week. That would be ideal. I also have been awarded a little work study, which will be time as a research assistant.
Next year, I can probably start teaching. At the Grad Center, they don’t really have teaching assistantships. Any time after your first year, you can apply to the many many adjunct positions available. Many, if not most, institutions in the city go to the Grad Center for their adjuncts. I’ve probably received ten postings for adjunct jobs from the dept email list in three weeks. So this is a great institution for teaching experience.

I now have a rug. And yes, it ties the room together. It also cuts down on the echo a bit and should tame the hardwood dust bunnies a little.

The weather has cooled a bit. We’ll see how long it lasts. If I’m lucky, six months.

I heard from first quotable quote in class today… In response to a student questioning Constantine’s choice to be baptized in a Roman bath rather than a church: “Bathing didn’t stop with Christianity.”

Nostalgia + Celebrities = Funny

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Go to NBC’s website for episodes of Conan O’Brien.

Select the episode for September 4 (they usually keep episodes up for a week or two).

Go to about 31:40.

To think we now complain about lead in our toys…

Not so ashamed I was Doogie Howser fan in my youth

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
NPH cracks me up.  And if you haven’t purchased Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog from iTunes, maybe this trailer will convince you to spend the $5:
If you *are* a Dr. Horrible fan, you can buy the music album off iTunes as well.  And if you are the ultimate nerd, you can convert the beginning part of the Bad Horse reprise into a ringtone.  Sweet.

P.S. For some reason, every time I tried to embed these videos, it would screw up the entire format of the blog. So you just have to deal with following the links.

P.P.S. Old Spice has some pretty damn funny commercials. If you have spare time, check out their site. You can get licensed as a pretend doctor or determine your body hair profile.

Me Want Insurance

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I want insurance pretty badly.

1) My vision correction is definitely not up to par. It’s probably good I don’t have to drive. And I have been squirreling my last pair of contacts, since it’s been three years since I bought any.
2) I really should see a chiropractor. My back and neck are consistently sore and frequently cracking. I’ve had pins and needles in my right hand for a month. Something is out of whack. I’ve had achy back for ages because I’m tense, but this time it’s not just muscular.

3) Fortunately, I haven’t had dental trouble. But I don’t want to tempt the fates. It’s been three years since my last check-up.

4) I haven’t needed a general practitioner yet since I had access to PP, but again, I don’t want to press my luck and now I’ve moved out of state.

I hope I get a job at school, because that would mean by spring I can have insurance. I just need a little maintenance; I’m getting rusty.

Selections from H.P. Lovecraft’s Brief Tenure as a Whitman’s Sampler Copywriter

Makes me slightly nervous that I’ve eaten Whitman’s candy this week.

Entry Whatever: Dinner Plans Fell Through

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

My professor had invited the medievalists over to his house for dinner, but he has been mildly ill and doesn’t want to spread it to us through his cooking.  Fair enough.  However, I had already gotten ready and such.  Oh, well.  Maybe I’ll wear this for my interview at Starbucks (exciting) tomorrow.

I have my last first class tomorrow–paleography.  I’m not sure if I can actually get in the class; it might be full but the prof said to come anyway.  I have a backup option if necessary.

It rained a lot yesterday and cooled the air notably, just not enough to open the windows and turn off the air.  I tried.

Back to work.

Entry #15: My first extra-curricular social outing

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

I spent most of the day trying to start my homework.

This evening, I met up with a few folk from the history dept at a nearby bar.  They were meeting to watch UFC on PPV.  However, even though someone (I don’t know who) had called to verify, the bar wasn’t actually showing the fight.  But I did drink soda and talk in a bar for over an hour, so I consider it a social success.

P.S.  Bars are smoke-free.  Neener to my midwest homies.

P.P.S.  I watched all of PR Season 3.

P.P.P.S.  I eated too much mole.  And enjoyed it.
